Pathways, courses and programmes
Pathways, courses and programmes

The different pathways offer a range of course types, subjects, and programmes that cater to diverse learning interests, styles, and aspirations. The courses can have different subject requirements and prerequisites.

JC and MI

Education in JC and MI prepares students for the GCE A-Level certificate or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

To be admitted into a 2-Year A-Level course or IBDP in JC, or a 3-Year A-Level course in MI, you must meet the specific subject requirements and maximum L1R4 (using G3 grade) gross aggregate scores of 16 and 20 respectively.

Once admitted, you will take specific subjects and may apply for programmes as part of the curriculum.

After completing the course, you may proceed to a university, polytechnic or an arts institution.

Polytechnic diploma

Students will gain hands-on and practice-based learning experience through 3-Year polytechnic diploma courses in various fields of study.

To be admitted into the diploma course, you must meet the specific subject requirements and maximum ELR2B2 (using G3 grade for EL, R2 and 1 Best subject and G2 equivalent grade for 1 Best subject) net aggregate score of 22. For Diploma in Nursing, ELR2B2-C net aggregate scores must not exceed 24.

Learn more about the ELR2B2 net aggregate score and minimum entry requirements of courses.

After completing the course, you may proceed to a university, an arts institution or enter the workforce.

Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP)

The PFP is a 1-Year programme that prepares polytechnic-bound students for progression into relevant polytechnic diploma courses through a practice-oriented curriculum. The programme is conducted over 2 academic semesters at the polytechnics by polytechnic lecturers. Students will be admitted to the PFP in three broad clusters* before being posted to a diploma course at the end of the PFP year.

To be admitted into PFP *, you must obtain a maximum ELMAB3 (using G2 equivalent grade) gross aggregate score of 12, and meet the minimum entry requirements (MERs) of the cluster*.

*Students may continue to be admitted to diploma-specific PFP courses for selected specialised courses.

ITE 2-Year Higher Nitec

Students will receive technical and vocational education through 2-Year Higher Nitec courses in various fields of study.

To be admitted into the 2-Year Higher Nitec course, you must obtain a maximum ELMAB3 (using G2 equivalent grade) gross aggregate score of 19, and meet the minimum entry requirements (MERs) of the course.

After completing the course, you may pursue a diploma with ITE or the polytechnics, or enter the workforce.

ITE 3-Year Higher Nitec

Students will receive technical and vocational education through 3-Year Higher Nitec courses in various fields of study.

In Year 1, students will undertake broad-based foundation modules exposing them to fundamental skills needed for the relevant industry sector, before taking more specialised modules in Years 2 and 3.

After completing the course, you may pursue a diploma with ITE or the polytechnics, or enter the workforce.

5th year in secondary school

The option of a 5th year in secondary school will continue to be available for eligible students to pace their learning and take subjects at a more demanding level to access more post-secondary pathways.

Students will be eligible for the 5th year if they meet either one of the following criteria:

  • 3 or more G3 Passes, and not qualify for JC, MI or polytechnic diploma course
Students do not qualify for admission to polytechnic diploma if they fail to meet the minimum entry requirements for any polytechnic diploma courses or if their ELR2B2 net aggregate score is 23 points or higher (after accounting for CCA bonus points).
  • 2 or fewer G3 Passes, and attain a gross ELMAB3 ≤ 21, ELB3 ≤ 14 or MAB3 ≤ 14, computed at G2
Students will need at least Grade 5 at G2 for all subjects used in aggregate computation.

Only students with a gross ELMAB3 (at least Grade 5 for all subjects computed at G2) of 19 points or better can offer all their subjects at G3 in the 5th year.

Students who do not offer sufficient G2 or G3 subjects to compute the eligibility criteria for the 5th year may consult their schools on their eligibility.

Students eligible for the 5th year should approach their secondary school directly about taking up this option.
