Honouring Special Education Teachers and Schools

1. In celebration of their contributions to the education of students with moderate-to-severe special educational needs (SEN), Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi, presented the MOE-SG Enable Awards to recognise four Special Education (SPED) teachers and four projects from SPED schools at the SPED A.C.E (Affirmation·Celebration·Engagement) Day1 today. Two SPED teachers were also awarded the MOE Master's Scholarship in Special Education (MSSPED) at the event.

2. The MOE-SG Enable Awards are a joint initiative between the Ministry of Education and SG Enable2 and comprise the Outstanding SPED Teacher Award (OSTA), the Promising SPED Teacher Award (PSTA), and the Innovation Award (IA).

3. The OSTA and PSTA celebrate SPED teachers' excellence in supporting their students' development and learning. The OSTA is awarded to experienced teachers with at least six years of teaching experience, while the PSTA recognises teachers with three to five years of experience. This year, the OSTA and PSTA recipients were selected from a total of 179 nominations from colleagues, parents, students and members of the public.

4. The IA recognises SPED schools for outstanding innovations in teaching and learning that develop students' ability to live independently, learn continuously and work meaningfully. The IA recipients this year were selected from a total of 19 projects involving 14 SPED schools.

5. The MSSPED, administered by MOE, was introduced in 2011 to provide SPED educators with opportunities for professional upgrading through postgraduate studies. The scholarship is open to registered and trained Singaporean SPED teachers with at least five years of service in government and community-funded SPED schools.

6. Two SPED teachers received the OSTA for their passion, dedication and commitment in providing a well-rounded education for students with SEN. They are:

  • Ms Chin Mei Foong, Michelle @Mish'al Iman, Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore School (West)
  • Ms Oh Kailing Eileen, Rainbow Centre Admiral Hill School

The MOE – SG Enable Promising SPED Teacher Award

7. Two SPED teachers received the PSTA. The award recognises the achievements and contributions of exemplary SPED teachers with the potential to be inspiring leaders and/or mentors. They are:

  • Mrs Kaminee d/o Ramakrishnan, Grace Orchard School
  • Ms Nursyafiqah binte Mohamed, St. Andrew's Autism School

8. Four projects from six SPED schools received the IA. The projects are from the following schools:

  • APSN Delta Senior School
  • APSN Katong School
  • Grace Orchard School
  • Rainbow Centre Admiral Hill School, Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive School, Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School3

9. The two SPED teachers who received the MSSPED are currently pursuing their postgraduate studies. They are:

  • Ms Goh Hui Ling Fiona, APSN Chaoyang School
  • Mr Abhinav Joshi, Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore School (East)
