News Press Releases

The National School Games (NSG) 2022 is officially underway for approximately 60,000 student athletes across 29 sports.

2. This will be the first time that student athletes from all 29 sports are able to participate in the NSG after it was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years. The Games were cancelled for the first time in 2020, since its inception in 1959, and were partially restored in 2021.

3. The NSG, which runs from March to August this year, is Singapore's largest and most extensive annual youth sports event with more than 250 divisional competitions for both boys and girls. Organised by the Singapore Primary Schools Sports Council and the Singapore Schools Sports Council, the NSG not only provides opportunities for students to participate in inter-school competitions, but also encourages character-building among student athletes as they pursue sporting excellence.

4. Minister for Education Mr Chan Chun Sing, who was the Guest-of-Honour at today's NSG Opening Ceremony, said: "Sports has been an integral component of our education system and an important platform for character development for many years. The high vaccination rate among our students has given us greater confidence to resume all sports in the National School Games safely for our students. The full resumption of the Games has been warmly received by schools, students and their parents, in support of our students' holistic development."

5. From March through April, schools will conduct their own symbolic ceremonies to allow students to show support for their school representatives and appreciate the value of sports participation.
