Opening Ceremony of the Inaugural National Tertiary Chinese Reading Festival 2019

1. More than 300 students and members of the public attended the opening ceremony of the Inaugural National Tertiary Chinese Reading Festival 2019 at Ngee Ann Polytechnic's performing arts space, Music Box, on 8 November 2019. Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Chairperson of the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), Ms Low Yen Ling, was the Guest-of-Honour.

2. Co-organised by the CPCLL and Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the month-long event seeks to encourage the creation of original literary works and ignite passion in the reading of Chinese works among tertiary students and the public.

3. Themed "Reading for pleasure, to create the future through knowledge acquisition (悦读‧阅快乐：以知识打造未来)", the opening ceremony of the Festival featured a keynote speech by renowned Chinese director, Mr Qi Hao Nan, and sharing sessions on the importance of reading by media producers and educators. Details on the keynote speech and sharing sessions are in the Annex.

4. In the lead up to the Festival, many tertiary students and members of the public participated in various reading and writing activities. For example, the Wumo Creative Writing Competition, launched in early September, provided a platform for tertiary students to submit original literary works. Winners of the competition will be recognised at the closing ceremony of the Festival on 6 December. Another notable activity was the One Colour One Genre Audiobook Activity on Modern Chinese Literary Works, launched in mid-October. The public could access literary works online¹ and experience these works at their own convenience.
