Question

To ask the Minister for Education for each cohort of students in each of the last five years respectively, what is the percentage of students from the Normal Technical stream who have transferred to the Express stream by the end of their secondary school education.

Response

1. Over the last five years, an average of around 530 students (close to 10%) transfer from Normal (Technical) to the Normal (Academic) course. Of these, about 10 to 20 each year eventually transferred to the Express course.

2. In 2018, after Subject-Based Banding was rolled out to all schools, about 60% of Secondary One Normal (Technical) students offered selected subjects at Normal (Academic) and Express levels, in line with their strengths.

3. Beyond mobility between secondary school courses, there are also multiple post-secondary pathways to cater to the diverse strengths and talents of our students.
