Record 210 Students Awarded the Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS) in Its 15th Year

1 This year marks the 15th year of the Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS)¹, with a record number of 210 students receiving the SgIS. Minister for Education, Mr Desmond Lee, graced the 2026 SgIS Award Ceremony, held at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

2 The SgIS aims to nurture a core of Singaporean industry leaders to steer the development of the country's key strategic industries. To date, it is the only multi-industry scholarship offered in partnership between the Government and local industries. Since its inception, SgIS has established itself as one of the choice scholarships in Singapore, and awarded more than 2,000 scholarships to Singaporean students.

3 The SgIS highlights the importance the Government and local industries place on developing a pipeline of local talent that are essential for Singapore's economy and businesses in the long run.

4 From 28 Sponsoring Organisations (SOs) in 2012, the number of SOs for SgIS has increased steadily over the years to a total of 146 in 2026. These 146 SOs come from 16 key sectors, including biomedical and pharmaceuticals, electronics, engineering, lifestyle and food, and social services. Their strong support for SgIS provides good career opportunities that will develop a strong Singaporean talent pipeline to support strategic sectors.

5 Mr Foo Kuo Yang, Senior Director, Human Resources of STMicroelectronics said: "For STMicroelectronics, SgIS is a strategic way to build local talent for the future and create a pipeline of Singapore-grown engineers and leaders who are exposed to the semiconductor industry early and nurtured over time. SgIS supports not just recruitment, but also resilience, capability-building, and leadership growth, allowing us to invest in people who can contribute meaningfully to both our company and Singapore's broader technology ecosystem. SgIS scholars bring fresh ideas, energy, and a strong willingness to learn. When they join STMicroelectronics, they contribute to innovation and help reinforce a culture of learning, leadership, and knowledge sharing. They also add value beyond the workplace through community outreach activities, such as hosting primary and secondary school students, and help inspire the next generation. These experiences strengthen their empathy, responsibility, and awareness of their role in society while reminding our employees of the wider impact of what we do."

6 Mr Yong Derong, Executive Director of Woh Hup (Private) Limited said: "SgIS allows us to engage promising young talents early in their academic journey, ensuring that we are not just hiring graduates, but actively grooming the next generation of potential leaders who are equipped to build more resilient infrastructure for Singapore's future. This early engagement allows us to nurture talent in a way that is aligned with both our business needs and the future direction of the industry and creates a stronger connection between young Singaporeans and the Built Environment sector, helping them see the purpose and impact behind the work we do. By working alongside experienced professionals on real projects, SgIS scholars gain firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities within the Built Environment sector, and develop a holistic understanding of how different disciplines come together to deliver complex developments which strengthens their professional growth and future proof their entry into the workplace within the sector. The mentorship and guidance by our team members also help to strengthen our culture of knowledge sharing and leadership development as we groom the next generation of leaders to ensure that Woh Hup continues to be a key home-grown builder, helping Singapore to build and contribute towards improving lives in years to come."

7 All SgIS scholars will have opportunities to be exposed to industry-relevant experiences and hone their leadership skills, as part of the SgIS Scholars' Development and Engagement Programme. The programme includes:

• Internships and mentorships conducted by SOs to give undergraduate scholars a head start in acquiring industry knowledge;
• Forums with thought leaders from the public and private sectors to expose scholars to broader issues concerning Singapore and its key industries; and
• Social activities organised by the SgIS Scholars' Network Executive Committee (EXCO)² to develop the scholars' leadership and soft skills, as well as contribute back to the SgIS community and the wider society.

8 By end-2026, about 1400 SgIS scholars would have graduated from university. They will be part of a sustainable pipeline of industry leaders who can drive Singapore's economic growth.
