Students' Singing and Songwriting Creativity on Display at Annual Xinyao Competition

1. 48 students were recognised for their vocal and compositional talent at the "Xin Kong Xia" (新空下) Xinyao Singing and Songwriting Competition 2026. This year, 356 participants from 68 schools submitted 124 original creations, a strong testament to students' continued interest in Xinyao, a genre of Mandarin songs unique to Singapore. Guest-of-Honour Ms Jasmin Lau, Minister of State for Education and Chairperson of the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), delivered a speech and presented awards to winners at the award ceremony. 2. Now in its 12th year, the competition returned to a community space with the grand finals held at Our Tampines Hub's Festive Arts Theatre – reflecting the grassroots origins of Xinyao, which began as a youth-led cultural movement in Singapore 44 years ago. The winning entry for the Lyrics Writing Category, 《飞向云霄》 ("Soaring to the Skies"), penned by Sun Yucheng and Zhan Li from Catholic High School, was performed live during the event.
3. Jointly organised by the CPCLL, Lianhe Zaobao, TCR Music Station, and Jurong Pioneer Junior College, this annual competition aims to nurture students' interest in the Chinese language while encouraging creativity, original songwriting and appreciation of Singapore's Xinyao heritage.

About the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning
The Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL) was established in January 2005 by the Ministry of Education to bring together schools, community organisations, the media and professional bodies to foster the learning of Chinese language, literature and culture beyond the classroom.
