New Community Programme Empowers Parents to Interact with Their Infants in Mandarin from Birth

家长工作坊：如何与0-12个月的婴儿用华语进行互动

1. Parents of infants now have access to practical tools and strategies to nurture their children's foundation in the Chinese language from birth, with the launch of a new community programme, Parents' Workshop: Interacting in Mandarin with Infants Aged 0–12 Months (家长工作坊：如何与0-12个月的婴儿用华语进行互动).

2. Jointly organised by the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL) and Tengah Grassroots Organisations, this pilot programme shows parents how to weave the Chinese language into their daily caregiving routines via the Chinese Language Multi-Sensory Interaction Guide Cards for Infants (与0-12个月婴儿多感官互动指引卡), which enable them to engage their infants in Mandarin through sight, sound and touch.

3. The pilot programme comprises five workshop sessions facilitated by past recipients of the Outstanding Preschool Mother Tongue Language Award , who will demonstrate interaction techniques and guide parents in using the activity cards with their infants. Parents can then bring the cards home to incorporate them into daily routines. The sessions will be held at Tengah Community Club on three Saturdays across July to September 2026:

Introducing Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) from an early age is part of a broader effort by the three Mother Tongue Language Learning and Promotion Committees to bring MTL learning and use beyond the classroom and into homes from the earliest stage of a child's life. Following evaluation of this pilot and feedback from parents, the programme will be enhanced and expanded to include the Malay and Tamil languages, in collaboration with the Malay Language Learning and Promotion Committee and the Tamil Promotion Committee respectively.
