Closing of the 14th Asean Schools Games: Singapore Student-Athletes Showcased Grit and Sportsmanship

1. At the 14th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) in Brunei Darussalam, the Singapore Schools Sports Team (SSST) contingent showcased resilience, tenacity and sportsmanship, and bagged a total of 33 medals comprising 8 Golds, 13 Silvers, and 12 Bronzes across Athletics, Netball, Swimming, and Wushu. ASG as Valuable Platform for Students' Holistic Development
2. Mdm Rasidah Binte Rahim, Chef de Mission and Principal of Clementi Town Secondary School, said: "The ASG helps shape character, build friendships and nurture a strong sense of identity and purpose. Students experience both victories and setbacks, and these moments help them build character and mental strength. I hope that our students will continue to strive for excellence, both in sport and in life, and carry with them the values and lessons gained from this meaningful journey. I also want to extend my sincere appreciation to the host country, Brunei, for their outstanding hospitality and dedication in making this a successful and memorable Games."
3. Mr Tham Kin Long, Head Coach of the Athletics team, echoed similar sentiments on the value of the ASG in students' development. Mr Tham said: "The ASG presents an opportunity for young athletes to gain valuable experience, build confidence, and develop essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience."
4. Sepak Takraw player Aniq Hasif shared his experience on how ASG has contributed to his growth as a player: "Competing with teams from different countries pushed me to play better. I learned the importance of staying focused under pressure and to trust my team, no matter how tough the match gets."
5. The ASG experience was a memorable one for Swimmer Julian Lee, who won two gold medals in the 100m and 200m Backstroke events. He shared: "Winning a medal here isn't just about the result, it's knowing that I stayed focused, did my best, and made my school and country proud. It's a very special feeling."
6. Reflecting on her experience at the ASG, Netballer Japhanie Tan shared that winning the silver medal was a testament to the team's hard work and dedication. The Co-Captain said: "We started off as individual athletes from different backgrounds and gradually learnt to play together as a team. I'm glad we managed to leverage our strengths to form our unique style of play."
Strong Community of Support for Our Student-Athletes
7. As our student-athletes strove for sporting excellence in their respective fields, they were supported by a strong community comprising their families, peers, coaches and team managers.
8. Mr Kenneth Khoo, Team Manager of the Badminton team, shared: "The ASG is not just a sports competition, it's a total educational experience. Beyond competing and levelling up their playing skills, students also get to immerse themselves in a different culture, experience the local sights and interact with fellow student athletes of their age."
9. Mr Jeffrey Seah, father of Wushu athletes Dylan and Shelby Seah, was in Brunei with his wife to support his children and the Wushu team. He said: "It's amazing to watch all the ASEAN countries come together to compete in a common sport of Wushu. This is also the first time our children are competing together internationally and flying the Singapore flag high."
10. Mr Lim Boon Cheow, father of Basketball player Lim Jing En, was also in Brunei to support the team. He said: "My wife and I have been supporting our daughters' sporting journey as much as we can. We help out by taking videos, being an extra pair of eyes to watch out for safety, and also provide words of affirmation to the team, the coaches and team managers. We hope all these contribute a little to help sustain the efforts to groom resilient, determined young Singaporeans."
