Published Date: 31 May 2022 12:00 PM

News Press Releases

550 participants from 30 pre-university institutions1 have come together in person today to kick off this year's Pre-University Seminar. Co-organised by the Ministry of Education and National Junior College, the theme for the seminar is Service: Forging the Singapore Story, and students will have the opportunity to engage in dialogues on Singapore's development, identity and values, and place in the world amidst global complexities, to envision a shared future together. Through discussions and interactions with people of different background, students will also be able to glean insights into a range of issues, policies and perspectives.

2. Minister for Education Mr Chan Chun Sing was the Guest-of-Honour for the Opening Ceremony today, where he gave an opening address, engaged with participants in discussions, and took part in a Question & Answer session. Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth, and Trade and Industry, Mr Alvin Tan, will grace the Closing Ceremony on 3 June.

3. This year's seminar encourages participants to consider ways in which Singaporeans can play our part, big or small, in contributing to our nation. This is especially relevant and crucial considering the scale and changing nature of challenges and uncertainties that Singapore will face. Participants will work in teams to delve into one of four narratives – Harmony, Kindness, Resilience, and Innovation – and develop an understanding of the complexities of these issues.

4. The seminar includes learning journeys and panel discussions for participants to understand how the stories of various Singaporeans past and present, humble and visionary, stemmed from a true sense of service to their community and the nation. The seminar will culminate in a showcase of the participants' co-envisioning of the role that they, as young Singaporeans, will play in the Singapore Story.
