Eight secondary and pre-university students represented Singapore to showcase their outstanding research projects at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2022, competing against more than 1,750 youths from over 60 countries. Regeneron ISEF is one of the largest annual pre-college science fairs that provides top science and engineering talents a global platform to share their research.

2. In total, four individual projects and two team projects1 were submitted to ISEF and showcased virtually to a judging panel in Atlanta, Georgia. The delegation clinched a total of four awards. The Ministry of Education (MOE), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), and Science Centre Singapore congratulate them on their strong performance at this year's fair.

3. Two projects from the Singapore delegation looked into alternative uses for commonly found food waste – fish scales and cabbage peels, in line with the growing focus on sustainability issues today. Mr Malcolm Sow Miao Geng from NUS High School of Mathematics and Science discovered that fish scales could be repurposed to clean up polluted water, while Ms Lee Rui Xuan from Nanyang Junior College developed a way to test the freshness of raw squids using a natural indicator extracted from red cabbage peels. Both projects achieved 3rd and 4th Awards respectively in the Materials Science category.

4. The award-winning projects are as follows (more details on all projects at Annex):

Full Title of Award Students Project
3rd Award in the Materials Science Category Malcolm Sow Miao Geng from NUS High School of Mathematics and Science One Fish, Two Fish, Bright Fish, Clean Fish: Thermal Induced Biofluorescence of Fish Scale for Enhanced Chemical Adsorptivity
4th Award in the Materials Science Category Lee Rui Xuan from Nanyang Junior College “Sotong”-Nidin: The Detection of Squid Freshness Using Red Cabbage Extract (RCE)
4th Award in the Chemistry Category Annika Liu Xinan from Raffles Institution Go Mini or Go Home! Fabrication and Evaluation of Miniature Solid-State Ion-Selective Electrodes for pH Measurement
Special Award from China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) Anselmo Klement Chua and Branden Kang Jun Zhao from Clementi Town Secondary School Turning the TCA Cycle Backwards to Repair Damaged DNA

Footnotes
  1. The ISEF student delegates were selected based on their outstanding performance at the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) 2022, a national competition jointly organised by MOE, A*STAR and Science Centre Singapore.
