Name and Constituency of Member of Parliament

Mr David Hoe, Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC

Question

To ask the Minister for Education in respect of sports coaches engaged by Ministry of Education (MOE) schools, (a) what youth-specific training is required on child and adolescent growth, biological maturation, relative-age effects, early specialisation and age-appropriate training loads; and (b) whether the Ministry will consider requiring all such coaches to complete a recognised youth-development coaching module.

Response

  1. The requirements that MOE imposes for sports coaches engaged by schools are aligned with the requirements for membership in Sport Singapore’s National Registry of Coaches (NROC).
  2. For full NROC membership, coaches must complete SG-Coach Theory, Foundational Sport Science and SG-Coach Technical courses separately or as an integrated programme. These programmes cover topics relating to Long-Term Athlete Development, including growth and maturation, developmentally appropriate coaching practices and considerations relating to early specialisation.
  3. MOE will continue to review the requirements for coaches together with SportSG and relevant stakeholders, to strengthen coaches’ competencies in supporting holistic and age-appropriate sports development of our students.
