Question

To ask the Minister for Education (a) for admission to the autonomous universities (AUs), whether the Government is aware of (i) any limitations placed on recognising part-time, as compared with full-time, diplomas from local polytechnics and (ii) the reasons for these limitations; (b) if so, what are they; and (c) whether the Government plans to work with the AUs to review these limitations.

Response

  1. Part-time polytechnic diploma programmes are designed to equip adult learners with industry-relevant skills for their intended job roles. Thus, such programmes may differ from full-time programmes in curriculum, academic breadth, learning outcomes, and programme structure. A part-time diploma does not necessarily cover the same content, skills, and experience as a full-time diploma.
  2. In determining whether a diploma is recognised for admission to a particular undergraduate programme, AUs assess whether the content, rigour, and relevance of the diploma provide the necessary foundation for the academic demands of that programme. This applies to both full-time and part-time diplomas.
  3. The AUs will assess if the diploma, relevant work experience and other qualifications provide suitable preparation for the course of study applied for. Admissions requirements vary across AUs and programmes, with each AU having the discretion to determine which qualifications are recognised for admission.
