Question

To ask the Minister for Education what are the plans for National School Games (NSG) competitions and similar sporting events that are scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2021.

Response

1. The National School Games (NSG) is an integral part of school life for our student athletes. Due to the COVID-19, we had to cancel NSG and other sporting events this year.

2. MOE is monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely. We plan to resume NSG in 2021 under enhanced Safe Management Measures (SMMs) and are currently working with SportSG on the detailed parameters for the safe conduct of these Games. Key considerations would be to minimise intermingling and contact between student athletes from different schools; provide sufficient spacing at waiting areas; and to strictly adhere to personal hygiene and cleaning protocols. Modifications to some sports may also be required so that students can participate in them safely. We will announce details of the arrangements at a later date.

3. In the meantime, schools have resumed some sports co-curricular activities (CCAs) within the current national guidelines for sports. MOE is committed to providing a holistic education for our students while ensuring that our schools remain a safe environment for learning and growth.
