English Language Elective Programme at the Pre-University Level (ELEP-JC)

This 2-year programme in selected junior colleges is for students with a passion and flair for the English language. Students pursue an in-depth study of the English language where they investigate language issues and analyse language use in different contexts.

The English Language Elective Programme at the Pre-University Level (ELEP) was introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2009. It aims to:

  • Nurture students to attain a high level of proficiency in the English language.
  • Enhance their understanding of language issues and skills in analysing the English language.
  • Expand the pool of local English language specialists.

Programme activities

Under ELEP, students are exposed to a range of activities offered by the ELEP centres. These activities range from symposiums, field trips, internships to school-based projects and research papers.

Where to take it

The ELEP is offered at:
  • Anglo-Chinese Junior College
  • Catholic Junior College
  • Raffles Institution

How to join

Interested students are encouraged to seek admission to junior colleges that offer ELEP. Upon admission, students are to indicate interest in joining the programme to the English Language and Linguistics teachers. Students must attend and pass the selection exercise conducted by the school at the start of JC1.

Singapore citizens may be eligible for the English Language Elective Scholarship.
