Internship

Internship is a mandatory degree requirement and carries 1 course unit (CU). To earn the 1 CU credit, students are required to complete pre-, mid- and post-activity reflections on their selected learning objectives for all internships that contribute to the degree requirement of total 10 weeks.
Work study option
- BBM (Private Banking) SkillsFuture Work-Study Degree: Third-Year BBM Singaporean students majoring in Finance who are interested in private banking may apply to this Work-Study Degree. Selected students will undergo an 8-month internship with DBS and be rotated through the relevant departments within the bank to gain practical skill sets and competencies. This initiative is supported by the government’s Financial Sector Development Fund (FSDF) which aims to build a Singaporean talent pipeline of job-ready graduates for the finance sector through structured Work-Study Degree internships at financial institutions.
Work-Study Electives
- BFI Family Office Management Work-Study Elective: The 5-month internship programme in a family office presents valuable opportunities for you to take on a broader range of responsibilities and to learn directly from senior management, compared to junior internships at a larger corporate organisation.
- Overseas Entrepreneurship Work-Study Elective: This is the Global Innovation Immersion 6-month Track Programme offered by the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which combines an internship engagement with credit-bearing coursework at an international partner university.
- Management Consulting Work-Study Elective (Industry experience with Bain): Learn from one of the Big Three management consulting companies during a 5-month internship, applying consulting tools in solving strategic issues for organisations in a wide range of industries.
- Global Trade and Maritime Work-Study Elective: The collaboration between SMU and industry partners provides you with the opportunity to undergo a 5-month internship programme at a partner company in the global trade and maritime sector.
Overseas exposure programme
SMU has made it a requirement for all undergraduates to acquire overseas experience during their period of study at the University. When students approach their global exposure opportunities with an enthusiastic and open mind, the benefits are immense. Academically, gaining a first-hand, real-world perspective of issues learnt in the classroom serves to deepen students’ learning and knowledge application. More importantly, the journey builds independence, empathy, open-mindedness, not to mention soft-skills like communication and teamwork. These attributes not only build character and personal development, but also give students an edge when they are seeking employment and advancement in the competitive workplace.
