News Press Releases

180 students from 24 secondary schools participated in the fourth National Chinese Riddle Competition (全国中学生灯谜比赛) on Saturday, 17 May 2025, at Hwa Chong Institution (HCI). Jointly organised by the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), Tung Ann District Guild, Riddle Association (Singapore) and HCI, the competition aims to engage students in the art of solving Chinese riddles and foster their appreciation of Chinese language and culture.

2 Minister of State for Education and Chairperson of the CPCLL, Ms Gan Siow Huang delivered a speech and presented awards to the winners. At the competition, student participants took part in a pen-and-paper quiz, where the top 10 teams in the Chinese and Higher Chinese categories advanced to the Finals and competed in a live fast-paced quiz. The scope of the competition was aligned with what students learnt in the Chinese Language curriculum. Please refer to the Annex for the list of participating schools.

3 As a new initiative, CPCLL launched weekly Chinese riddle challenges on its Instagram platform in the lead up to the competition, to engage students in this traditional wordplay. Additionally, more than 170 students from 18 schools took part in a Chinese Riddle Workshop to learn riddle-solving techniques while gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for traditional lantern riddles.
