News Press Releases

The 8th Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) Symposium will be held on Saturday, 24 August 2019, from 11am to 8pm, at the Suntec Singapore Exhibition and Convention Centre. Minister for Education, Mr Ong Ye Kung, will be the Guest-of-Honour.

2. In line with this year’s theme of “A Garden for Joyful Discovery”, the Symposium will feature an exciting experiential garden for children to discover the joy of learning MTLs through interactive activities. Parents can also pick up useful tips from local education experts and celebrity parents on how to create conducive home environments to inculcate a love for MTL in their children.

3. Into its eighth year, the Symposium continues to strengthen the nexus between families, pre-schools, schools and the community, in establishing a supportive ecosystem for the learning of MTLs.

Highlights of MTL Symposium 2019

4. This year, the Symposium will feature the following:

Discovery Land: Through four experiential zones – the Forest, the Eco-pond, the Flower Maze and the Fruit Orchard – children will take on the role of explorers in this interactive garden and join the MTL Symposium mascots in discovering the wonders of nature using their MTLs.

Garden Ensemble: Children can catch 29 interactive MTL performances such as dances, folk songs, cross talk, Dikir Barat, and storytelling at the Garden Ensemble area from 11.30am to 6.50pm.

Sharing sessions and workshops: Local education experts such as Dr Anitha Devi Pillai, plus celebrity parents and renowned speakers such as Ms Kate Pang and Mr Andie Chen, Mr Shahrizal Salleh, Mdm Jumaini Ariff and Mr Anandha Kannan, will share their insights and suggest creative ways to encourage children to learn MTL at home. More information on the speakers can be found in the Annex. Participants will also get to learn from other pre-school and primary school curriculum experts, with 40 sessions and workshops to choose from.

Exhibition booths: Parents and educators can explore fun and innovative ways of nurturing a child’s love for MTL through booths set up by pre-schools, schools and community partners. With the inclusion of the pre-school curriculum and pre-university booths this year, parents and educators can also better understand the different opportunities for MTL learning at various levels.

MTL Creative Corner: The MTL Creative Corner is an area set up for parents and children to bond through handicraft work. This year, children can also learn about interesting cultural facts behind the handicraft they are working on.

5. A wide range of books, CDs, and picture cards will be available for sale at the Symposium. Visitors can browse through a range of recommended books and materials for MTL learning, as well as specially produced books by partner organisations such as the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism.
