Young research talents excel at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2019

1. Nine students represented Singapore at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2019 in Phoenix, Arizona, US, where they clinched a total of six awards. The Ministry of Education (MOE), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Science Centre Singapore congratulate the Singapore Team on their commendable performance.

2. Held from 12-17 May this year, Intel ISEF is one of the world’s largest science and engineering fairs where passionate and outstanding young talents gather to showcase their research projects. Through the fair, our students were able to demonstrate their keen ability to grasp and apply scientific concepts to solve real-world challenges. They also interacted and exchanged insights with approximately 1,800 other young scientific talents from over 80 countries, regions and territories.

3. The six awards, which were won by four individual and two team projects, are as follows:

Developed an innovative technique to determine the effectiveness of detergents using rotating magnetic nanoparticles and magnetic impedance spectrometer

Research on a novel approach of defect-introduction into zinc oxide-capped carbon nanoforest via focused-laser-beam to enhance its field emission properties

Natalie Elizabeth Yam from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)



Designed and tested origami paper parachutes for use in humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations

in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines Category



Liu Haohui from Raffles Institution



Developed an effective, early warning, machine-learning approach to detect fake-news which is location-independent, requiring only the text of the article

Developed a graphene-enabled origami-templated synthesis to produce a novel platinum-carbon composite material for soft robotics that is simultaneously flexible, conductive, durable and magnetic
