Grand Finals of National Schools Xinyao Singing and Songwriting Competition 2018

2018年“新空下”全国学生新谣歌唱及创作比赛大决赛

10,000 participants from about 80 schools took part in the National Schools Xinyao Singing and Songwriting Competition this year, and a total of 27 awards were given out. The grand finals were held on Saturday, 28th July 2018 at Singapore Polytechnic Convention Centre.

2. Organised by the Committee to Promote Chinese Language and Learning (CPCLL), Jurong Junior College, Lianhe Zaobao and TCR Music Station, the competition’s aim was to promote the learning of Chinese Language by stimulating students’ interest and inspiring them through singing and composition of songs.

3. For this year’s newly introduced Songwriting (Creative) category, 19 entries were received. Inspired by texts from the current Chinese (Secondary) curriculum, written by well-known local and overseas Chinese literary writers, the students transformed the lines into fun and interesting songs. Three entries were also performed live for the first time during the grand finals, in front of the 1,200-strong audience.

4. Chairperson of CPCLL, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Ms Low Yen Ling said, “The competition has grown since its launch four years ago and attracted an annual following. Through this songwriting experience, we hope that the students will reap the joy of learning the Chinese language and appreciate its lyrical quality. Through our multi-faceted activities, we seek to create a rich and diverse cultural environment that enhances our students’ love and interest in learning Chinese.”
