News Press Releases

This year, 190 student-athletes from 40 Singapore schools will represent Singapore at the 10th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) in Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam, Malaysia, from 19 to 27 July. Singapore will compete in 10 sports: badminton, basketball, gymnastics, netball, sepak takraw, squash, swimming, table tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

2. The theme for this year’s ASG is “Unity through Sports”. We hope our Singapore student-athletes and their ASEAN counterparts will form friendships through their shared passion for sports, and learn from each other through cultural exchanges.

3. Second Minister for Education, Ms Indranee Rajah, was the Guest-of-Honour at the ASG send-off ceremony held on 4 July. She said: “Sports has the amazing ability to bring people together, no matter what their race, background, or nationality. ASG is an opportunity for our student-athletes to strengthen the Singapore spirit, and contribute to our success together. Beyond the sporting arena, I hope that our student-athletes will continue to be advocates of sportsmanship and character, and bring home with them important life skills such as resilience and team work.”

4. In addition, 69 officials, including MOE and school staff, will be accompanying the student-athletes to the ASG. Chef de Mission and Principal of Bedok South Secondary School, Ms Pauline Fun, will be leading the contingent. She will be assisted by Deputy Chef de Missions, Mr Wee Tat Chuen, Principal of Geylang Methodist School (Secondary) and Mdm Jenny Tan, Principal of Gan Eng Seng School.

5. Ms Fun said: “I am proud to see our student-athletes training hard and coming together as one for the upcoming ASG in Malaysia. I am confident that they will do their best in the pursuit of sporting excellence, and that they will strengthen their character in the process.”

6. Over 1,000 student-athletes from ten ASEAN nations1 will be participating in the ASG this year. Organised by the ASEAN Schools Sports Council2, ASG aims to promote ASEAN solidarity among youths while providing opportunities for student-athletes to benchmark their sporting talents. The student-athletes from the Singapore Schools Sports Team contingent were selected based on their overall performance at the National School Games, and other local and regional sports competitions. Student-athletes must be 18 years old or younger on 1 January of the year of the Games, and be full-time students in their respective ASEAN countries.
