Question

To ask the Minister for Education in the past three years, how many Singaporeans have been awarded scholarships by foreign universities.

Response

1. Many established universities give out scholarships to deserving international students, at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, such that they pay lower or close to no tuition fees. Some of the foreign universities that Singaporean students attend on such scholarships include the University of Cambridge, University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Fudan University and Waseda University. For some European countries such as Austria, France, Germany and Norway, university tuition is either free or fees are significantly marked down for all students, including international students.

2. Schools do not actively track the number of their students who have been awarded scholarships by foreign universities.
