Leveraging technology to enhance students’ Mother Tongue Language learning experience

We thank Mr Chen Jie Sheng for his suggestions (“玩游戏学母语”, May 2).

Mr Chen will be glad to know that the 2024 Primary Mother Tongue Language (MTL) curriculum will feature greater use of technology to help students experience the joy of learning MTL. The refreshed curriculum comes with a suite of interactive digital resources that can be accessed through the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS). This includes animated videos, online games, and e-books. For example, the Hanyu Pinyin Animation (小精灵动画) and Shen Bi Animation (神笔动画 - 汉字小时候) use stories to guide students in learning Hanyu Pinyin and word recognition in fun and engaging ways. In addition, students engaging in self-directed learning can tap on the tools and features in the SLS, such as the text-to-speech (文字转语音) feature, to strengthen their Chinese Language skills.

Beyond the classroom, the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL) works with various community partners to organise activities throughout the year to nurture and deepen students’ interest in the Chinese Language. For example, CPCLL launched the World Book Day and Literature Under the April Sky (世界书香日暨文学四月天) last month to cultivate students’ Chinese reading habit. This month, students can look forward to participating in activities such as the National Chinese Riddle Competition (全国中学生灯谜比赛) and Chinese Street Dance Competition (爱上华文街舞比赛).

Parents play an important role in shaping our children’s attitudes and mindsets towards language learning. We encourage parents to offer their children opportunities to learn and love the language at home. MOE will continue to work closely with parents, schools, and the wider community to make language learning enjoyable, and provide a conducive environment that nurtures our students’ love for their MTL.
