Mainstream Schools

Provisions and Support in Mainstream Schools

If your child has mild SEN, he/she can receive support from the school through specialised support programmes and services, teachers trained in Special Needs (TSNs) and Allied Educators (Learning and Behavioural Support) [AEDs(LBS)].

If your child requires access arrangements for national examinations (e.g. extra time), you may approach your child’s school or find out more from the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB).

Mainstream schools run learning support programmes and school-based dyslexia remediation programmes to help children who may need help in literacy and numeracy. Children with dyslexia may also enrol in the MOE-Aided literacy remediation Programme (MAP) at the Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS), where they may qualify for subsidised programme fees.

Mainstream schools are also able to support children with mild ASD with the assistance of TSNs and AEDs(LBS).To help children with emotional, social and/or behavioural difficulties and disorders, such as ADHD, schools work closely with REACH (Response Early Intervention and Assessment in Community Mental Health) services and parents on suitable school-based interventions and support.

Children with visual impairment, hearing loss and/or physical impairment may tap on itinerant educational support services, where personnel from SSOs such as AWWA and SADeaf, provide additional support in school to enhance the child’s accessibility to learning and the environment.

To support the learning of children with visual impairment, hearing loss, and/or physical impairment, MOE provides assistive technology such as Frequency Modulation (FM) systems, magnifiers, text-to-speech software, for the children’s use. Please refer to the FAQs for more information on the Assistive Technology Devices. You may also approach your child’s school for further clarifications.

To support children with moderate to profound hearing loss or visual impairment, who are able to follow the mainstream curriculum, designated mainstream schools provide specialised support, such as resource teachers who are trained to teach children with these special needs. You may refer to the table below for these schools.
