Bachelor of Laws
In today's evolving world, legal professionals must be adept in more than just law due to the complexities introduced by globalization, commercialization, and technological disruption. At the SMU Yong Pung How School of Law, we prepare our students for future legal practice by fostering intellectual agility and equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and values to handle unprecedented situations.
LLB graduates who attain a grade point average of at least 3.00, take the Preparatory Course leading to Part B of the Singapore Bar Examinations and pass those examinations, and meet various other requirements will be eligible to be called to the Singapore Bar. Those called to the Bar who complete a 12-month period of practice training will be qualified to practise law.
Since the inception of SMU, in service of humanity, SMU has required all students to perform community service as a graduating requirement. Students enrolled in the LLB program have to serve this 80 hours by:
doing 80 hours of SILE approved pro bono work; or doing the mandatory minimum of 20 hours of SILE approved pro bono work and the remaining hours in community service work offered by Centre for Social Responsibility (C4SR).

Overseas exposure programme
SMU has made it a requirement for all undergraduates to acquire overseas experience during their period of study at the University. When students approach their global exposure opportunities with an enthusiastic and open mind, the benefits are immense. Academically, gaining a first-hand, real-world perspective of issues learnt in the classroom serves to deepen students’ learning and knowledge application. More importantly, the journey builds independence, empathy, open-mindedness, not to mention soft-skills like communication and teamwork. These attributes not only build character and personal development, but also give students an edge when they are seeking employment and advancement in the competitive workplace.
100% of our students can embark on at least one global experience before graduating, by participating in any of the following SMU-organised overseas activities:
