Bachelor of Integrative Studies
The Individualised Major does not require the student to take any pre-fabricated combination of subjects. The student will identify an industry or societal problem they wish to address and design a unique major in service of this problem they have identified. All Bachelor of Integrative Studies students will choose one of two tracks: professional track and research track. The professional track provides high exposure to industry and societal problems, enabling students to better bridge the gap between their university studies and future employment. The research track involves deep academic inquiry into the subject-matter and is particularly suitable for students with an interest in a policy, research or academic-oriented career. Every student on the Bachelor of Integrative Studies is assigned a faculty advisor and every student who chooses the professional track will also be paired with an industry mentor.

Work study option
SMU recognises the value of extended internships that enable students to interlace institution-based learning with structured on-the-job training and provide substantial and impactful work opportunities within the internship company.
The Integrative Studies Work-Study Elective is a minimum 20-week industry attachment taken with an external employer. During this work-study stint, students will alternate between working at least four days at their chosen company and studying on campus for up to one day each week.
This Work-Study Elective combines work and study in a meaningful way, by addressing the broad themes of the student’s proposed Bachelor of Integrative Studies Individualised Major (BIS(IM)) or Individualised Second Major (ISM).
Overseas exposure programme
SMU has made it a requirement for all undergraduates to acquire overseas experience during their period of study at the University. When students approach their global exposure opportunities with an enthusiastic and open mind, the benefits are immense. Academically, gaining a first-hand, real-world perspective of issues learnt in the classroom serves to deepen students’ learning and knowledge application. More importantly, the journey builds independence, empathy, open-mindedness, not to mention soft-skills like communication and teamwork. These attributes not only build character and personal development, but also give students an edge when they are seeking employment and advancement in the competitive workplace.
100% of our students can embark on at least one global experience before graduating, by participating in any of the following SMU-organised overseas activities:
