Singapore National Youth Orchestra

The Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) has been under the auspices of MOE since the 1980s.  Formerly known as the Singapore Youth Orchestra (SYO), it was officially renamed SNYO in 2001. As a key development programme for talented young musicians, the SNYO is recognised by MOE as a National Project of Excellence.  Currently led by Principal Conductor Dr Leonard Tan, the SNYO is made up of over 200 talented young musicians between the ages of 10 and 21 representing more than 50 schools across Singapore. Entry into the SNYO is by a rigorous audition process, and members studying in mainstream secondary schools will have their participation in the SNYO recognised in lieu of a school-based Co-Curricular Activity (CCA).

From 1 April 2015, the SNYO started a new chapter in its musical journey with the transfer of the management and operations from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). The Singapore Symphonia Company Ltd (parent company of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra) is currently the appointed management body for the SNYO with funding provided for by the National Arts Council. This has enhanced the development of arts talent as the SSO is able to provide high levels of expertise and mentoring from among its orchestra musicians to young SNYO members.  The SSO aims to sharpen SNYO’s focus on developing the most talented classical musicians and building a vibrant music community for Singapore. The SNYO hopes its future graduates will excel at the technical playing of their instrument, hone their sense of artistic expression, develop strong character, and develop a lifelong love for music.

The SNYO has a record that includes an impressive repertoire, overseas guest conductors and performers, collaborations overseas with international youth orchestras and participation in international concert festivals.
