JUMBO Group of Restaurants Pte Ltd

JUMBO Group began with the inception of JUMBO Seafood, a Singapore-style seafood restaurant, in 1987.

Best known for its chilli and black pepper crabs, the company has evolved over the years and now offers multiple diverse Asian dining experiences, serving more than 7,500 diners daily.

At JUMBO, people are its most valuable assets. Its comprehensive human resource programme identifies and advances talented individuals who merit recognition.

Its fast-track programme promotes qualified service staff to supervisory level within 12 months instead of the usual 3 to 5 years. Rewards, benefits and welfare are also put in place to motivate employees to strive for excellence.

A strong testament to the group’s commitment to human resources is it being awarded the SME Employer of the year and the People Excellence Award in 2015.

As of today, JUMBO Group employs a total of over 1000 staff.

Potential career path and developmental opportunities for scholars

In JUMBO, it is in their practice to have a bi-annual appraisal and promotion exercise. With this system in place, it will typically take an entry level employee approximately 2.5 years to be promoted to the position of a Supervisor.

Over the years in operation, JUMBO realised that they have many high performing talents and this pace of promotion might be a little slow for these employees. In 2011, JUMBO implemented the Fast Track Programme to curb this issue to allow these high potential employees a faster paced career progression as well as be given the opportunity to develop and grow with their company.

Employees with high potential will be identified by their superiors and recommended to be placed on this programme. There will be a rigorous selection process where the identified individuals will be assessed on their attitude, skillsets for their current designation as well as their mindset for growth and leadership opportunities. They will then be put on a series of On-Job-Training (OJT) and subsequently assessed for their competencies at various junctures. With each assessment cycle, these individuals will also be put through a 360 evaluation to have a sensing of how they fare with interpersonal skills as well as to ensure they will be respected by their peers when they get promoted. These fast trackers will also be assessed on problem solving skills and planning capabilities.

With this programme, identified talents will typically take one year from being an entry level staff to be promoted to the position of an Assistant Supervisor. This programme has been very well received and benefited our staff and the company. With the success of this Fast Track Programme in the service sector, JUMBO has also extended this programme for our kitchen sector.
