News Speeches

1. Good afternoon and welcome to the 5th Asian School Table Tennis Championships 2016. To our friends from the Asian School Sports Federation (ASSF), a very warm welcome to Singapore!

2. This is the first time Singapore is hosting the Table Tennis Championships since it began in Macao 23 years ago.

3. Singapore also hosted the 16th ASSF Technical Committee meeting, attended by 18 Asian countries, this morning, and will be hosting the 13th ASSF General Assembly tomorrow. This afternoon, some of you are also attending the 5th ASSF Forum where representatives from Malaysia, People’s Republic of China, and Singapore will share about “Values Education in Sports”. Thank you for your active contributions in all these meetings.

4. Coming back to table tennis, the host nations of the previous editions of the Championships have done very well in providing meaningful and positive experiences for our young Asian paddlers. Over the years, the championships organised under the auspices of the ASSF have helped to develop and promote table tennis to students in Asia. Many of our young athletes move on to do very well on the world stage.

5. Beyond table tennis, the ASSF also organises competitions and exchanges for 10 other sports to provide many opportunities for student athletes from the Asian schools, to compete, learn and make friends. We are thankful for the work of the ASSF.

6. Over the next few days, our school athletes will compete and learn from one other in table tennis. But I hope it will not stop there. I hope you will take time to get to know each other. When you spend so much time training in the sport you love, while still juggling schoolwork, you will find kinship in the sacrifices you have made to play at this level. Cheer for one another. Support one another.

7. Whether you are a student athlete, official or delegate, Singapore has much to offer you even beyond the table tennis championships. I welcome you to explore our bustling city that has its unique charm. Experience the many peoples, cultures, foods, old and new places that make our city so interesting.

8. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the immense effort put in by the 5th Asian School Table Tennis Championships Organising Committee, ably led by Mdm Chia Li Gek and her team, and supported by officers from the Ministry of Education, for coordinating this event, and making it a meaningful one for our youth athletes. All these are possible only because of the strong support from members of the ASSF, led by the President, Mr Yang Li Guo of China. I hope the ASSF will continue this good work.

9. I shall now declare the 5th Asian School Table Tennis Championships open!
