Inaugural Chinese Street Dance Competition to Cultivate Love for Chinese Language

1. As part of our efforts to raise our students’ interest in learning the Chinese Language, the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL) and Mandarin edutainment channel, MaxToon, are jointly organising the inaugural Chinese Street Dance Competition (爱上华文街舞比赛) for local primary school students.

2. Aspiring young dancers, aged seven to 12, are invited to participate in the competition to cultivate their love for the Chinese language and culture through music and dance. As part of the competition, they will have to deliver an oral introduction of their dance in Chinese and demonstrate their interpretation of the lyrics of “爱上华文” (the theme song of the competition) through their dance moves.

3. Chairperson of CPCLL, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education Ms Low Yen Ling said, “This first-ever Street Dance Competition is a novel way for students to get in touch with the Chinese language through music and dance. Through this experience, they will find the Chinese language modern, relevant and fun. As the students express their understanding of the Chinese songs through dance, we also hope they will gain a new connection and appreciation of the Chinese culture and language.”

4. Mr Eugene Lee, spokesman of MaxToon said, “As a dedicated Mandarin edutainment kids content provider, MaxToon has always been promoting the learning of Chinese in a fun and engaging way. We are happy to be able to work with CPCLL to create this platform to help children develop interest in Chinese through something they like, such as street dance.”

5. Registration is now open. All Singaporeans and Permanent Residents studying Chinese as their Mother Tongue Language in MOE Primary Schools are welcome to join the competition. Students may form a team of five to 10 members and submit a dance video by 22 February 2019. The finals will be held on 23 March 2019 and the top three teams will be featured in the music video of the theme song.
