OYEA 2017 – National Honours for Inspirational Young Educators

1. In recognition of their inspiring teaching and unwavering dedication to their students, six young teachers received the Outstanding Youth in Education Award1 (OYEA) from Minister for Education (Schools), Mr Ng Chee Meng, at the National Institute of Education (NIE) Teachers’ Investiture Ceremony on Wednesday, 5 July 2017. They are (not in order of merit):

  • Mr Chiew Jing Wen, 33, from Serangoon Garden Secondary School;
  • Ms Faith Huang Huiru, 31, from Farrer Park Primary School;
  • Mdm Farah Bte Syed Haider Alsagoff, 34, from Chongzheng Primary School;
  • Mr Muhamad Fadly Bin Mohd Ariff, 34, from Temasek Primary School;
  • Ms Sarene Loh Kah Lye, 33, from Ngee Ann Secondary School; and
  • Mr Simon Sng Kuo Wai, 32, from Westwood Secondary School.

2. These six recipients – who were selected from 12 finalists – have demonstrated their strong belief that education is about nurturing the child holistically, and that they are committed to the character development of students. They have been effective in motivating their student to bring out their full potential. They have also distinguished themselves by adopting innovative approaches in and outside the classroom, and have school-wide impact through working with, and inspiring teams of teachers.

3. The OYEA recipients were chosen by the OYEA Selection Panel, comprising representatives from MOE, NIE, the National Youth Council, and the media. A total of 3,816 nominations from schools and members of the public were received, with 962 teachers from 237 schools put forward as nominees.

4. Besides honouring the achievements of young educators, OYEA aims to inspire youths to take up teaching as a fulfilling profession. Each of the OYEA recipients will receive a trophy, citation certificate, and be fully sponsored to attend an overseas professional development programme. After the programme, they will be expected to share their learning points and takeaways with the education fraternity. The list of OYEA 2017 finalists is in Annex A.

  1. The OYEA is a national award that recognises young teachers for their commendable enthusiasm, energy, and active involvement in youth development. Since its inception in 1999, 66 outstanding young educators – including this year’s recipients – have received the award.
