The English Language Entrance Proficiency Test (EL EPT) is applicable for applicants who are being considered for teaching English-medium and non-English medium subjects. The Ministry will require applicants to sit for the EL EPT at its discretion. Applicants will be informed to register and sit for the tests accordingly.

The test comprises two parts:

  • Speaking component (approx 20 minutes): Candidates will be required to read a passage aloud and deliver a monologue. This will be followed by a few minutes of dialogue with the examiner.

  • Writing component (100 minutes): Candidates will be required to complete a piece of situational writing (200 to 300 words) followed by a short expository essay (approx 450 words).

Important Information

If required to sit for the EL EPT, applicants will be scheduled by the Ministry to take the test. Applicants will need to meet the minimum requirements of the test before they can be deployed to schools as untrained teachers. No rescheduling of the test date is allowed unless under exceptional circumstances. Applicants will be notified of the test date, time, venue and payment details by email a week prior to the test.

The cost of the EL EPT is S$110.00 (inclusive of GST). The registration fee is non-refundable. No refund of payment will be given to those who register but are absent or withdraw from the test.

Statement of Result

The Statement of Result indicates if an applicant has met the minimum requirements of the EL EPT. Applicants will receive this document four weeks after the test date. The test result is valid for a period of two years from the date of the test.

Please note that requests for reviews of test results will not be entertained.
