Results of the 2007 Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Normal Level) Examination

1.         The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Normal Level (GCE N-Level) Examination is conducted jointly by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate and the Ministry of Education (MOE).

2.         18,108 students in the Secondary 4 Normal Course sat for the 2007 GCE N- Level Examination in September/October this year.  Of these, 11,653 students were from the Normal (Academic) [N(A)] course and 6,455 students were from the Normal (Technical) [N(T)] course.  Details of students and schools that performed well in the N-Level Examination are available at Annex A.

3.         Starting from this year, to provide greater flexibility and customisation in the N(A) course, MOE has provided for selected N(A) students to bypass the N-Level Examination and progress directly to Secondary 5 Normal Course (Sec 5N) to take the GCE Ordinary Level (O-Level) Examination.  This first batch of students, who were selected at the end of Sec 3N(A) last year based on their school-based performance, numbered around 1,200.

4.         This year, 11,568 (99.3%) students from the N(A) course and 6,307 (97.7%) students from the N(T) course will be awarded the N-Level certificate.  The N-Level certificate is awarded to a candidate who obtains a passing grade of Grade 5 or better in at least one subject.

5.         In addition, 110 N(T) students offered one or two N(A) subjects and 60 (54.5%) of them have obtained at least a Grade 5 or better in their N-Level Examination.[1]

Progression to Sec 5N

6.         Students in the N(A) course who obtain an aggregate not exceeding 10 points in their three best subjects and a Grade 5 or better in English Language (EL) (Syllabus A) will be promoted to the Sec 5N in 2008.  8,447 students (72.5%) are eligible for promotion this year.

7.         This year, 3,197 N(A) students sat for 1-2 subjects in the O-Level Examination[2].  These students are also eligible to proceed to Sec 5N if they obtain an aggregate not exceeding 10 points in their three best subjects and a Grade 5 or better in EL (Syllabus A) using their combined GCE N-Level and their school’s O-Level preliminary examination results.

Admission to Higher NITEC courses at ITE

8.         From this year, N(A) students who obtain an aggregate of 19 points or less for EL, Mathematics and three other subjects, with at least a Grade 4 in EL and Mathematics, will have an additional option of enrolling in a new curriculum track allowing for direct entry to Higher Nitec courses at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).  These include courses from the Engineering, Infocomm Technology, Applied & Health Sciences and Business[3] clusters.  With this option, eligible students can start their Higher Nitec studies a year earlier, without having to sit for the O-Level Examination.  The Higher Nitec courses that students are eligible for will be indicated on the personalised ITE application form that all Normal Course students will receive when they collect their results.  Eligible students may apply through the ITE website (www.ite.edu.sg) during the Joint Intake Exercise in December.

Progression of N(T) students

9.         All N(T) course students who have completed their secondary education in 2007 can apply to further their studies at ITE.  Schools may also allow Sec 4N(T) students to be laterally transferred to Sec 4N(A) if the students obtained a mean grade of 2 or better for all N(T) subjects in the same sitting.

Release of results

10.       School candidates have been issued with their results slips by their respective schools from 2:00 pm today.  Private candidates will be informed of their results by post.  Private candidates may also access their results through the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board website at http://www.seab.gov.sg from 2:00 pm today.
