Background

6.         Administered by The National Youth Council and supported by Teachers Network, Training and Development Division of the Ministry of Education, the OYEA is a national award which honours the achievements of young educators. It recognises the enthusiasm, energy and active involvement of exceptional young teachers in the development of youth beyond the formal education curriculum. It also serves to inspire youths to take up a teaching career and become an excellent role model for the younger generation.  Since its inception in 1999, 24 inspiring and outstanding young teachers have received the OYEA.

7.         For OYEA 2007, 270 teachers were nominated – 91 from primary schools, 152 from secondary schools, and 27 from the Junior Colleges and Centralised Institute.  Three teachers received the OYEA 2007 from Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education, at the National Institute of Education’s Teachers’ investiture Ceremony held on 10 July 2007.
