Establishment of English Language Elective Programme (ELEP) Centres

1.         The Ministry of Education will establish three English Language Elective Programme (ELEP) Centres in 2009. These centres will serve as centres of excellence at the junior college level to encourage students with an aptitude and interest in the English Language to excel in it. The three centres are Anglo-Chinese Junior College, Catholic Junior College and Raffles Junior College.

2.         The ELEP Centres will offer the new pre-university level English Language subject, EL ‘A’, which will be implemented from 2009. These centres have indicated strong interest and a commitment in offering EL ‘A’ to their students. More details on EL ‘A’ will be made known at a later date.

3.         All three junior colleges selected as ELEP centres have established traditions in English Literature, English enrichment programmes and the Arts. These centres will be supported by MOE through the deployment of additional teachers, provision of teaching resources and funding for special programmes.

Background

4.         The ELEP and the EL ‘A’ are recommendations made by the English Language Curriculum and Pedagogy Review Committee in October 2006. These recommendations aim to encourage junior college students with an aptitude and keen interest in the English Language to excel in it.
