Inaugural Singapore International Science Challenge 2007

1.         The Ministry of Education, together with National Junior College and supported by Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), will host the inaugural Singapore International Science Challenge 2007 (SISC 2007). This week long event, running from 20 to 26 May 2007, enjoys the participation of students and educators from 10 top local schools and 18 top foreign schools from around the world (see ANNEX A for the participating schools). A total of 57 teams from these schools will compete in a Research Project Presentation and solve the Science Challenge, in a bid to become the Grand Champion of SISC 2007.

2.         This event highlights our efforts in getting our young minds to engage in scientific research and inquiry at an early stage. Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, is the Guest-of-Honour for the opening ceremony on 21 May 2007. Minister of State, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Manpower, Mr Gan Kim Yong, is the Guest-of-Honour for the closing ceremony on 25 May 2007.

3.         Educators from participating schools will also have the opportunity to share their experiences via seminars and professional sharing workshops that will explore diverse aspects of science education – from pedagogy to the integration of IT in schools today.

4.         Members of the public are invited to view the Research Projects on the third day of the Challenge (Tuesday, 22 May, 2 pm – 5 pm) at National Junior College.

Platform for benchmarking and learning

5.         Many countries are increasingly recognising the importance of science, technology and innovation to power economic growth and are taking steps to strengthen their Science and Technology capabilities. Similarly, Singapore is doing the same as it moves towards a knowledge-based economy. One of the significant milestones of this development was the setting up of the National Research Foundation (NRF) last year to encourage and fund strategic R&D initiatives.

6.         In line with the national framework for strategic R&D efforts provided by NRF, the SISC 2007 has been organised to provide a platform for our students to pit their abilities against their international counterparts and to interact and learn from each other on engaging in science. It would also provide opportunities for local and foreign students to establish partnerships in the areas of Science and Technology for future collaborations.
