Racial Harmony Music and Dance Day 2003:
Harmony in Symphony
1. About 1250 student participants from 49 Primary and 34 Secondary Schools, representing all 28 school clusters will take part in the Racial Harmony (RH) Music and Dance Day on Saturday, 19th July 2003, at Anglo-Chinese Junior College. About 240 student leaders from junior colleges/centralised institutes will also be involved as facilitators and helpers.
2. As its theme, “Harmony in Symphony”, suggests, the event will bring students of diverse racial backgrounds and different schools together to learn about and appreciate each other’s culture through music and dance. Students will learn the basic ethnic dance movements, identify ethnic musical instruments and sing local community songs together.
3. This event is one of the recommendations of the Committee on Strengthening Racial Harmony in Schools (CSRHS) to enhance efforts to strengthen and deepen racial harmony in our schools. The event will provide students with opportunities to learn about the importance of cohesion and teamwork. At the same time, the older students, from the Junior Colleges will learn about the important role they play in nurturing and strengthening our social cohesion by guiding the teams of younger Secondary and Primary students. The Music and Dance Day, which brings together students from different schools, is the climax of on-going activities on racial harmony which schools have on their own put in place.
4. Last year, the Racial Harmony Games Day with the theme, “Harmony in Diversity”, was held on 20th July at Tampines Junior College. It brought together pupils of diverse backgrounds to interact with one another through exciting indoor and outdoor activities.
