SIX MORE SCHOOLS UNDER PRIME

1          Under the fifth phase of implementation of the Programme for Rebuilding and IMproving Existing Schools (PRIME), six more schools will be upgraded. Upgrading works for the schools will complete between Jan 2006 and Jan 2007. Please see list of schools at Annex A. 

2          The selection of new PRIME projects takes into account our educational goals as well as the need to ensure financial prudence and value for money. Given the current economic climate, development projects such as PRIME are being stretched over a longer period of time, beyond the previous timeframe of 2005. 

Background 

3          PRIME was launched by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in May 1999. Its objective is to upgrade all schools to the latest standards so as to provide a conducive learning environment for our students. Estimated to cost $4.5 billion, this programme will be implemented in phases. To date, 195 schools have been included in the earlier four phases of PRIME. Of these, 118 schools have completed their upgrading. 

4          Under PRIME, schools will be fitted with new and upgraded facilities, which include computer laboratories, media resource libraries, IT learning resource rooms, pastoral care rooms and health & fitness rooms. Schools will also be networked for access to the Internet. Teachers and students can also look forward to bigger classrooms and staff-rooms, and more interaction areas.
