SPEECH BY RADM TEO CHEE HEAN, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION AND SECOND MINISTER FOR DEFENCE & MP FOR PASIR RIS GRC AT THE PASIR RIS ZONE ‘10’ RESIDENTS’ COMMITTEE LAUNCHING OF REPAIRS AND REDECORATION WORKS CUM CHILDREN’S PARTY ON 12 DECEMBER 1999 @ 11.10 am

Mr Alan Tai, PBM, Chairman of Pasir Ris Loyang CCC,

Mr Terry Ong, Organising Chairman,

Mdm Josephine Tan Chairperson

Pasir Ris Zone ‘10’ RC, grassroots leaders and residents.

1    Pasir Ris GRC is a young town with a bright future. It is one of the best designed towns in Singapore. Pasir Ris 21 was developed not only as a guide for the development and upgrading of Pasir Ris GRC in the coming years, but also to enhance the spirit of community bonding in this young estate. I am heartened to see this spirit of community bonding today with the joint activity of the RC Children’s Party and the launching of Repairs and Redecoration Works (R&R).

2    Pasir Ris Town Council will carry out Repair and Redecoration Works for Blks 180 to 199 Pasir Ris St 11.

3    R & R is a cyclical work done on a 7 year cycle. Under R & R, residents can look forward to several improvements to their estate. Besides a fresh coat of paint for the blocks, the lift lobbies’ wall will be re-tiled to give them an up-to-date look.

4    The Town Council will also be replacing the existing letterboxes with anti-junk mail letterboxes. These new letterboxes will allow residents to decide whether to receive all mail or only those delivered by Singapore Post. By locking the aperture, only mail sent by Singapore Post will reach the owner. If you would like to receive all mail, simply leave the aperture unlocked.

5    The Town Council will also retile the floor and walls of wash areas in the void decks. For residents’ safety, more lampposts will be installed to brighten the place. Residents will welcome the colourful hardcourt after rerendering and improvements to the surface.

6    Besides improving the facilities, the Town Council will complement the surroundings with new and better landscape. Trees and shrubs will be planted to provide more greenery to the environment.

7    The existing block and carpark directional signs will also be replaced with illuminated ones to make it easier to locate a place especially during the night.

8    Costing about more than $2 million, the R & R project will benefit about 1,500 households. Work is expected to commence in Feb 2000. The Town Council targets to complete the project by the 3rd quarter of 2000. During these months, residents might experience some inconvenience, and the Town Council has asked me to seek your understanding while they do their best to minimize the inconvenience.

9    We would like to encourage all residents to treat the common properties as part of their extended home. Let’s all do our part to keep Pasir Ris clean, green and litter-free.

10    I wish all residents, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

Thank you.
