Inaugural Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS) Award Ceremony & Announcement of the SgIS Mid-Term
Ninety Singaporean Junior College and Polytechnic graduates will be awarded the inaugural Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS) today at the SgIS Award Ceremony by the Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat.
The SgIS was launched on 21 February 2012 by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in collaboration with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and other government agencies. Co-funded by both the Government and private enterprises, the SgIS aims to identify and develop future leaders in sectors that are critical to Singapore’s economic and social progress. Please refer to Annex A for background on SgIS.
More than 1,000 applications were received in its first year of offer. After a rigorous selection process, the inaugural batch of scholars will commence their full-term undergraduate studies between 2012 and 2014 in our local autonomous universities.
At the ceremony, the Minister together with the Chief Executive Officers and representatives from the 28 participating organisations and Statutory Board would be lighting up the SgIS logo to signify the commitment of this public-private sector collaboration.
Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS) Mid-Term
Mr Heng will also officially announce the introduction of SgIS Mid-Term, which will be offered to undergraduates currently studying in local and overseas universities, so as to extend the scholarship development opportunities to more local students. SgIS Mid-Term would complement the SgIS Full-Term to build a pool of Singaporean talents to anchor Singapore’s key strategic sectors.
Singapore citizens with at least one year of undergraduate results in a local autonomous university or the Singapore Institute of Technology, or an overseas university in 2012 are eligible to apply for the SgIS Mid-Term. Similar to the SgIS Full-Term scholars, SgIS Mid-Term scholars can look forward to early training opportunities by their sponsoring organisations and exciting and carefully crafted career pathways. Please refer to Annex A for more details on the SgIS Mid-Term.
Online scholarship application for the SgIS Mid-Term will open in October 2012. Interested applicants can obtain more information at the scholarship website.
