Progression to Sec 5 Normal (Academic)
The 2010 Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) cohort is the second batch of Normal (Academic) students to come under the revised promotion criteria for progression to Sec 5 Normal (Academic). Students in the Normal (Academic) course who obtain an aggregate not exceeding 19 points in English Language (EL), Mathematics and best three subjects (ELMAB3) and a Grade 5 or better for both EL and Mathematics will be promoted to Sec 5 Normal (Academic) in 20112.
This year, 4,124 Normal (Academic) students sat for subjects in the O-Level Examination3. These students are also eligible to proceed to Sec 5 Normal (Academic) if they obtain an aggregate not exceeding 19 points in English Language (EL), Mathematics and best three subjects and a Grade 5 or better for both EL and Mathematics, using their combined GCE Normal (Academic) Level and their school-based O-Level preliminary examination results.
In all, a total of 8,369 (70.9 %) students are eligible for promotion to Sec 5 Normal (Academic).
Direct Progression to Secondary 5 Normal (Academic) Course
Since 2007, selected Normal (Academic) students are given the opportunity to progress directly to the Secondary 5 Normal (Academic) Course, bypassing the GCE Normal (Academic) Level Examination. About 1,100 students were selected for direct promotion at the end of Secondary 3 Normal (Academic) last year, based on their school performance.
Progression of Normal (Technical) Students
All Normal (Technical) course students who have completed their secondary education in 2010 can apply to further their studies at ITE. Schools may also allow Sec 4 Normal (Technical) students to be laterally transferred to Sec 4 Normal (Academic) if they have obtained grade A for English and Mathematics and grade B or better for one other subject at the Normal (Technical) level.
Footnotes:
- The Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) Level Examinations are conducted jointly by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) and the Ministry of Education (MOE). ↩
- Previously, students had to obtain an aggregate not exceeding 10 points for their best three subjects and a Grade 5 or better in to be promoted to Sec 5 N(A). ↩
- Starting with the 2009 Sec 4N(A) cohort, MOE has lifted the cap on the number of ‘O’ level subjects N(A) students can offer at Sec 4N(A). Schools will continue to have the flexibility and discretion in assessing the suitability of students to take up these options and the number of ‘O’ level subjects these students can offer. ↩
