“This year’s winners of the Outstanding SPED Teacher Award have shown perseverance, patience and creativity in helping our children with special needs to realize their potential. Their nurturing qualities and dedication are inspirational and critical in helping the children to achieve better learning outcomes. NCSS will continue to collaborate with MOE and the SPED schools to enhance the quality of special education and capability building of SPED teachers.” said Ms Tina Hung, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS).
A total of 135 nominations for 60 teachers were received from 12 SPED schools, a measure of how the teachers are respected by parents, students and their peers. A selection panel, which included representatives from MOE, NCSS and partners in special education, reviewed and assessed the nominations to select the award recipients.
The Innovation Award
For their outstanding innovations to promote students’ learning, Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School, Delta Senior School and Tanglin School, won the Innovation Award this year. The award was established in 2007. This is the second consecutive year that Tanglin School has clinched the award.
Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School created the Social Enterprise, an in-school mini-mart, to provide a platform for students to practise and acquire skills needed for independent living. Delta Senior School actively fostered partnerships in the community to ensure that students have platforms to practise their workplace competencies through work attachments. Tanglin School embarked on a school-wide, inter-disciplinary project that involved students in activities that increased their awareness of environmental change, civic mindedness and social responsibility.
