SUTD and MIT in Talks to Collaborate on Masters and Post-Doctoral Programmes
The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have plans to collaborate on a dual Masters Degree Programme and a Post-Doctoral Programme. This was disclosed by Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, following his visit to MIT on 11 September 2010, where he met with President of MIT, Dr Susan Hockfield, and key MIT faculty.
Commenting on the masters and post-doctoral programmes, Dr Ng said, “The programmes represent a big step in SUTD’s efforts to become a world-class, research intensive university. Not only would the programmes help SUTD to attract the best faculty, they would also enrich SUTD’s undergraduate experience by driving innovations in teaching, and creating opportunities for undergraduates to engage in research.”
Dr Susan Hockfield said, “Given the active collaboration between MIT and SUTD around undergraduate education and research, developing masters and post-doctoral programmes at SUTD represents a natural next step in our work together. Such an expansion of our collaboration would add vibrancy to the research environments of both universities and bring us closer together as we advance the boundaries of design research.”
The progress comes in the wake of significant progress in the development of SUTD’s undergraduate education. MIT has worked closely with SUTD to identify and recruit top-quality SUTD faculty. The first group of SUTD faculty is scheduled to go to MIT next year for a year-long customised faculty training and development programme to help SUTD faculty better appreciate MIT’s pedagogical and teaching methods, and culture. SUTD faculty will co-develop curriculum with MIT faculty while there, as well as undertake collaborative research.
