Singapore International Mathematics Challenge 2010
The Ministry of Education (MOE), together with NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (NUS High School), will host the 2nd Singapore International Mathematics Challenge (SIMC) from 24 to 27 May 2010. The event is also supported by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
The theme for SIMC 2010, ‘Experior. Expono. Excedo’ (“Experience. Expound. Exceed.”), conveys the objective of getting young talents to engage in their passion for mathematics and to spur them to achieve greater heights in their work in mathematics. SIMC 2010 focuses on mathematical modelling problems with the emphasis on the creative applications of mathematics to solve real world problems.
SIMC 2010 provides opportunities for both students and educators to interact with their counterparts from all over the world, paving way for future collaboration in the area of mathematics. A total of 180 students and 51 educators from both local and foreign schools (see Annex A (48kb .pdf) for list of schools) will be participating in this year’s event. The students will form 60 teams to compete against each other in a series of mathematical modelling challenges that require them to creatively apply mathematics concepts and methods to real world problems. For participating educators, a series of symposiums and workshops will be organised to facilitate sharing into a range of interests in mathematics teaching and learning, from pedagogy to the application of digital media in schools today.
Dr Hang Kim Hoo, Principal of NUS High School and Chairman of the SIMC Organising Committee noted the significance of SIMC as a platform where the best brains internationally in Mathematics congregate. He said, “With 33 participating schools from 17 countries and regions, this challenge though intense, will certainly give an opportunity for the brightest sparks to bring out the best amongst them. As the organiser, it is our hope that educators and students can look forward to SIMC with great anticipation, making it one of the well-recognised biennial international events.”
Mr Koh Chin Nguang, Deputy Director of Curriculum Planning and Development Division (Sciences Branch), Ministry of Education, highlighted that “SIMC not only allows students to showcase and pit their skills in a rigorous competition in the application of mathematics, it is also an excellent platform for the professional exchange of good practices in Mathematics education across different countries.”
It is timely that in the year of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, the SIMC 2010 provides opportunities for both students and educators to interact with their counterparts from all over the world in the spirit of sharing and learning new knowledge. It is hoped that SIMC 2010 will serve as yet another avenue for expressing the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.
