Budding Filmmakers Recognised for their Creativity
More than 300 students, some as young as ten years old, received recognition for their creativity in the production of video, animation and audio at the Schools Digital Media Awards (SDMA) 2010 presentation ceremony on 1 March 2010. Participants may have the opportunity to showcase their talent to the world by having their creative works featured at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) and on the YOG website.
Co-organised by the Ministry of Education and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (School of Film and Media Studies), in collaboration with the Speak Good English Movement, NExus and the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee, the event honoured the creations from 241 schools, including 119 primary schools, 109 secondary schools, 12 junior colleges and Millennia Institute. 17 entries were also received in the Teachers’ Competition. Renowned film director, Mr Eric Khoo, was the guest-of-honour at the event.
SDMA 2010 attracted 655 student entries — a jump from 548 last year. A total of 66 awards for the Students’ Competition (three Platinum Awards, nine Gold Awards, 22 Silver Awards and 32 Merit Awards) and five awards for the Teachers’ Competition (two Gold Awards, one Silver Award and two Merit Awards) were given out at the award presentation ceremony. Winning teams received prizes in the form of trophies, product vouchers and certificates. SDMA winning entries can be viewed on the SDMA website. The list of winners can be found in the Annex.(52kb .pdf)
Participants were invited to express their views through different genres such as documentary, drama and advertisement. They may choose from four themes: Singapore 2010, National Education, Communication and the Environment. The entries were judged on their creativity, originality, educational value, adherence to given themes (where applicable) and technical quality.
MOE’s Director of Educational Technology, Dr Cheah Horn Mun, said, “It is exciting to see the high level of originality and talents displayed by the students. Through SDMA, we hope that students will have an additional platform to learn to harness their creativity, sharpen their story-telling skills and generally have fun working as a team within a creative medium.”
In the lead up to the competition, SDMA 2010 provided teachers and students with Media-in-Education workshops conducted by industry partners on various production techniques and story development.
