Resource Book on the Economics Behind Singapore's Public Policies

The Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore, together with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), has produced a resource book for ‘A’ Level Economics students entitled “Economics in Public Policies — The Singapore Story”. For the first time, the dynamics of the economic concepts and principles behind various key public policies in Singapore are captured in a resource book. It will serve as a useful supplementary text for ‘A’ Level students and university undergraduates, as well as a reference for public officials and those with an interest in public policy-making. By showing how economic concepts learnt by ‘A’ Level students can be applied in public policy-making, the book also aims to make the learning of Economics more relevant and realistic for students. The book was officially launched by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Finance, on 22 July 2009.

“Economics in Public Policies — The Singapore Story”, which includes a Foreword by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, was authored by five educators with between 10 and 25 years of experience teaching A-level economics. In writing the book, the authors received contributions and support from various government ministries and statutory boards. Academics from the LKYSPP, National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU) reviewed the book and provided inputs and comments. This book is the first collaboration project involving education officers from MOE, resource persons from the various ministries and several academics from all three universities (NUS, NTU and SMU) in Singapore. A list of the authors and key contributors is in the annex.

The book is co-published by Marshall Cavendish International (Singapore) Private Limited and will be sold in major bookstores from 5 August 2009.
