New Special Awards for Students

Starting from 2010, two new Lee Hsien Loong Awards will be given out to outstanding students. One award recognises post-secondary students who have attained outstanding all-round achievements, including academic and non-academic outcomes. The other award recognises outstanding bicultural students from the Bicultural Studies Programme (Chinese) and the Regional Studies Programme.

The two new special awards will be supported by the interest income generated from the endowment fund contributed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

The two new Awards are:

  • Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-Round Achievement

This award will be given to one student from each of the following four groups—Junior Colleges/Millennia Institute, Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Polytechnics, and Autonomous Universities—who have done well both academically and non-academically, particularly those who have made outstanding contributions to the community and demonstrated the spirit of Innovation and Enterprise. Each winner will receive an award of $600.

  • Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding Bicultural Students

This award recognises top bicultural students who are conversant in Chinese/Malay, and are able to engage China/our regional neighbours, as well as relate to the West. The award will be given to two top students from the Bicultural Studies Programme (Chinese) and one top student from the Regional Studies Programme. Each winner will receive an award of $500.

Background

In February 2008, MOE announced two awards financed from an endowment fund set up by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to be given out from 2009. The Lee Hsien Loong Award for Special Achievement recognises outstanding students from NorthLight School and Assumption Pathway School who have progressed to the ITE while the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Innovations in Normal Course recognises schools that have implemented innovative practices and raised the quality of education for their Normal Course students. The winners of these two awards will be announced at the end of this year.
