Honouring Special Education Teachers and Schools
Three teachers and two innovative SPED schools were recognized for their outstanding contributions in the area of education for children with special needs. Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of National Development presented the MOE-NCSS Special Education (SPED) Awards at a ceremony on 7 November 2008.
The Outstanding SPED Teacher Award
For their passion, commitment and perseverance in providing a well-rounded education for children with special needs, the following 3 teachers received the Outstanding SPED Teacher Award:
- Ms Chui Kit May, Chaoyang School
- Mdm Siti Anita Binte Rahmat, Chaoyang School
- Ms Wong Geok Choo, Pathlight School
“The winners of this year’s Outstanding SPED Teachers Awards are exemplary in their commitment and dedication, and are truly deserving of the award. As it is a demanding profession, NCSS and MOE recognize the need for SPED teachers to constantly upgrade their skills and enhance their capability”, said Ms Ang Bee Lian, Chief Executive Officer of the National Council of Social Services.
A total of 125 nominations for 81 teachers were received from 17 SPED schools, a measure of how the teachers are respected by parents, students and their peers. A selection panel reviewed and assessed the nominations to select the award recipients. More information on the award winners and selection panel are attached.
The Innovation Award
For their outstanding innovations to promote students’ learning, Chaoyang School and Rainbow Centre-Yishun Park School beat 7 other nominees to win the Innovation Award this year.
Chaoyang School’s efforts in setting up an internet cafĂ© provided an authentic learning environment for its pupils. The teachers developed a package to teach social emotional skills, proper dining etiquette and simple accounting skills - critical life skills which the pupils can apply to real life situations. Rainbow Centre-Yishun Park School also came up tops with their Stepianz Resource Library, which allowed the teachers to exchange knowledge, share resources and improve their teaching strategies.
