Students Turn Environmental Ambassadors at Learn@1°N

More than 300 pupils set out on a quest to learn about global climate change using Information and Communications Technology this morning. Jointly organised by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Science Centre Singapore, the competition, Learn@1°N, is open to pupils from Primary 4 to 6, and Secondary 1 to 3.

Held in conjunction with Science Centre’s exhibition on Climate Change, Learn@1°N engages pupils to learn about global climate change and its implications on population, resources and the economy. It was officially launched by RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts.

Learn@1°N comprises three segments—a pre-event online quiz from 20 to 23 May where students answered multiple-choice questions on issues relating to land, water and air; the Climate Challenge on 28 May; and a post-event competition from 28 May to 27 June.

For the Climate Challenge, pupils in teams of three used mobile technology to explore the different aspects of climatic change in an interactive game. Using wireless-enabled devices and Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPC), they solved online riddles to obtain clues to answer questions about climate change.

For the post-event competition, pupils will return to their schools to create a team blog. They will use the blog as a platform to discuss their findings and prepare a proposal that outlines an activity, or a series of activities, that they can implement to raise awareness of the consequences of climate change among their classmates. Pupils will submit their blogs as part of the competition.

A total of 354 pupils from 118 schools participated in Learn@1°N. Special education schools that took part in the event include Chaoyang School, Metta School, Pathlight School and Tanglin School.

The award ceremony for Learn@1°N will be held in August.
