            PM LEE TO ADDRESS 7,000 TEACHERS AT TEACHERS’ DAY RALLY

            Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be addressing some 7,000 education officers, including teachers, Principals and Vice Principals at his first Teachers’ Day Rally.

2.         The theme of the Teachers’ Day Rally this year is “Nurture Lives, Make Our Future” and teachers will get to hear Prime Minister’s views on the roles of teachers today, the challenges ahead and how they can engage the young in an ever-changing globalised environment for our future.

3.         The Teachers' Day Rally will be held on Thursday, 31 August 2006.   Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Finance, Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister of State for Education and Manpower and RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Minister of State for Education, will also attend the Rally.

4.         The Teachers’ Day Rally is a tribute to teachers, who are the heart of our education system. The previous two rallies were held in 1996 and 2001 during which then Prime Minister, Mr Goh Chok Tong, was the Guest of Honour.

5.         Highlights of the Prime Minister’s speech at the Teachers’ Day Rally will be telecast on Channel NewsAsia on 31 August 2006 at 10.30 pm.
